Logan, Utah | On The Logan River

Eleven Rooms, Every One Named For A Tree

Thirteen spaces and 32,000 square feet at the south end of Logan, on the river.

The Grove

The Naming System Was Already Here

Cache Valley's largest event center sits at the south end of Logan with the Bear River Range on one side and the Wellsvilles on the other, and the Logan River running past the courtyard. Inside it, a naming system nobody has ever drawn.

Maple, Willow, Poplar, Cherry, Cottonwood, Juniper, Elm, Mahogany, Redwood, Birch, Aspen. Every room in this building is named for a tree, and no one has ever drawn one. So we drew all eleven. The marks are the wayfinding, the capacity chart, the floor-plan key and the identity at once, and they cost nothing to adopt.

The Birch Courtyard: stamped paving, the gazebo, tulip beds, and benches along the Logan River. The outdoor season here runs late May to late September.

The Valley

Where This Actually Is

Logan sits on the east bench of Cache Valley, about 4,700 feet up, on the old bed of Lake Bonneville. The Bear River Range is the east wall, close to twenty miles wide and averaging well over 8,000 feet, with Naomi Peak at 9,979 the high point. The Wellsvilles are the west wall, one of the narrowest and steepest-rising ranges in the country, topped by Box Elder Peak at 9,372 feet.

The Logan River rises in those mountains in Idaho and comes down through Logan Canyon, 41 miles of scenic byway that ends at Bear Lake. The limestone up there drinks the snowmelt and gives it back as springs, which is why the river runs cold in August. It runs past the courtyard here.

This is dairy country at industrial scale, not artisanal charm. Gossner Foods, in Logan, takes in about three million pounds of milk a day.

The Year

The Calendar Here Is The University's

Utah State enrolls 29,831 students, a little over 20,000 of them on the Logan campus. The town moves with them. Fall classes begin 31 August 2026 and the single largest surge of the year comes with move-in. Homecoming is mid-October, with the parade down Main Street on the Saturday morning. Finals run 14 to 18 December and then the town empties for a month.

Spring semester opens 11 January 2027, spring break is 8 to 12 March, and commencement lands 5 to 7 May, the highest-demand weekend of the first half of the year. Then the students go and the Summer Citizens arrive.

Weddings peak June through September, heaviest in July and August, and they are booked in January, February and March. Late September into October is the other good window, because that is when the canyon maples turn.

Come Stand In The Room
